Info

The band was founded in Los Gatos, California by the members Chris Brown and Peter Charell.  They listened to Korn, Pink Floyed, 311, and Metallica.  Their first gig was at a highschool where the crowd was "really feeling it" according to Brown.

The next summer they let Simon Ormandy join the band.  They practiced and had a lot of fun at Ormandy's guest house.  Although, they didn't start recording a "do it yourself" CD until late 1997.  They handed their CD's out at local gigs.  Trapt had gotten semi-famous by the mid-1998 when they graduated from highschool.  They were opening for Papa Roach, Dredg, and Spike 1000.

They decided to pursue their education and their music careers.  They recorded another independent CD which was called Amalgamation.  Also, during their busy schedule, they found time to play local performances up and down the central coast.  Unfortunately, the group was growing apart because Brown and Ormandy enrolled at UC Sant Barbara, Charell enrolled at UC Santa Cruz thousands of miles away and their original drummer was relocating between Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  This all happened in the midst of the year 1999.

If it wasn't for Trapt's commitment to their music they wouldn't be here.  Chris Brown recalls, "Pete would drive down for rehearsals and gigs and pick up the drummer on the way.  It was a bitch trying to keep ourselves together over all those miles, but we really believed in what we were doing.  We were just hanging on, trying to make something happen."

They recorded another album, Glimpse, which had "Hollowman" and "Enigma" which are also featured on there newest self-titled album.  During the  year they thought they had gotten the big break they were looking for when Immortal Records approached them after one of Trapt's shows at Troubadour.  Unfortunately, the label quickly lost interest in Trapt.  Although, instead of being bummed and swearing off the music business they kept on going stronger than ever.  After that near famous experience they all dropped out of college optimistically.  "We'd come this far and it was like we all decided at the same time that music was what we were here to do.  Nothing was going to stop us," said an inspired and determined Chris Brown.

They got a major label deal when they recorded four tracks with Grammy-winner engineer Warren Rike that fizzelled away after eight weeks because of  creative differences.  And to make things worse, in 2001, Trapt's long time drummer left for unknown reasons.  Another quote from Chris Brown, "We'd quit school, turned our back on a record deal,  and to top it all off lost our drummer.  There was nothing  left to do but keep going."  Now if  that isn't determination I don't know what is.

It seems as if Monty was Trapt's good luck charm.  Monty is the drummer who replaced the original drummer.  Monty is a drummer with "wide music sensiblities and an immediate affinity for the group's tightly integrated sound," according to Trapt.  After putting together a showcase last year on September 11th they were immediately offered a contract with Warner Bros. Records.

This is a true Cinderella story.  Hundreds of struggling bands can learn from their story.  Determination is something you don't just give up on.  They are really inspiring and have given me hope to pursue my dreams.

I want to thank Trapt for not giving up after every shit storm that happened because if they did I wouldn't be able to enjoy their awesome music.

Also, I want to thank their website, where I got all of this information.  But don't worry I didn't plagerize.  The link to their website is in the Related Links link.
